Aeneas’ disk has 24 holes around its edge, one for each Greek letter. An additional hole identifies A, and another hole lies at the centre.
The sender passes a thin thread through the holes in the order of the message’s letters. The recipient removes the thread from the end and records the letters from right to left, restoring their original order.
