In the museum reconstruction, the pigeon has a light shell and an internal bag made from an animal bladder. The bag connects to an airtight boiler or air pump to receive steam or compressed air.
Pressure builds until the pigeon is released from its connection. Outflow from the bag produces thrust in the opposite direction. In the digital experiment, aim and launch pressure change the trajectory.
