The Antikythera Mechanism

The handle drives connected gears, transmitting rotation to the pointers at different ratios. The front combines calendar and zodiac scales with indications for the Sun, the Moon and its phase.

On the back, the Metonic cycle relates 235 lunar months to 19 years. The Saros cycle contains 223 lunar months and relates to recurring eclipses. These different periods explain why the pointers do not all move at the same speed.

Χειρισμός

  1. Compare the front and rear faces.
  2. Run the mechanism and compare the pointers’ speeds.
  3. Open the gear view and follow how motion is transmitted.

Calendar dates and the pointers’ initial phases have not been calibrated in the digital model. Its readings measure relative time.
