Water is heated inside an airtight boiler and becomes steam. The steam passes through the supporting pipes into the sphere.
Two curved nozzles release steam on opposite sides. The jets produce torque around the supporting axis, turning the sphere in the opposite direction to their outflow. Heron describes the device in his Pneumatics.
